Bronchos Blitz Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. (Nov. 13) – Sixteen minutes of suffocating defense turned the tide in Central Oklahoma's favor and the unbeaten Bronchos rode the momentum to a 79-51 annihilation of Cameron Tuesday night at Aggie Gymnasium.

UCO trailed 25-23 with six minutes left in the first half before turning up the defensive pressure.  By the end of the third period the Bronchos were coasting along with a 53-34 lead, having forced 13 turnovers while limiting CU to just 3-of-17 shooting from the field in outscoring the Aggies 30-9 during that 16-minute span.

Central coasted in from there, improving to 3-0 in its third game in five days.  The busy early-season schedule continues Thursday when the Bronchos host Oklahoma Christian at 5:30 p.m. in their lone home contest of the first semester.

"Our defense was strong the whole game and we did a good job of turning that into offense," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We moved the ball around and shot it pretty well.  It was a good road win for us and we're looking forward to finally getting a game at home."

UCO shot a solid 45.9 percent from the field and came up with 19 steals while forcing the Aggies into 27 turnovers.  Nine players scored and nine had at least one steal.

Megan Hartness led four players in double figures with 18 points.  Micayla Haynes scored 12 of her 17 points during a sizzling three-minute span in the third quarter, Blake Blessington had 12 points and Shatoya Bryson chipped in 10 points and three steals.

Madison Lee added eight points and six assists, while Ireon Smith contributed six points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots.

Both teams struggled early in the game with their shooting and it was a 10-10 tie six minutes into the opening quarter before two Bryson free throws and a three-point play by Kaci Richardson gave UCO a 15-10 lead at the 1:05 mark.

The Aggies hit two long-distance 3-pointers in the final 35 seconds to go in front 16-15 at the end of the quarter and CU was up 25-23 with 6:08 left in the second period when Central's defense took over.

The Bronchos ended the half with a 15-0 run, forcing six turnovers and allowing Cameron to get off just five shots in seizing a commanding 38-25 lead at the break.

Blessington started the surge with back-to-back 3-pointers from the corner to put UCO ahead, then Bryson followed another forced turnover with a trey from the top of the key to make it 32-29.

Haynes took a steal the length of the court for a layup, Blessington converted a turnover into a 10-foot jumper and Bryson went in for a layup after a Lee steal to complete the stunning spurt that put the Bronchos in control.

UCO continued its dominance to start the second half, outscoring the Aggies 12-3 in the first eight minutes to go ahead 50-28 and it was 53-34 at the end of the third period.

Cameron scored to open the final stanza, but Haynes answered with her personal 12-2 run.  The junior sharpshooter hit two corner 3-pointers and added three mid-range jumpers as Central went up 68-39 and it was all over.
