No. 16 UCO Overpowers Lions

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dug out a tough, 86-76 win over Lindenwood Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association showdown.

The Bronchos improved to 14-1 with the win – 5-1 in league play – and tied the school's second-longest win streak of nine straight.

"I'm really proud of the girls for digging down and really working to get a win today," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We were fortunate to get an early lead and that helped us a lot, because Lindenwood is a scrappy team, they fought to the end. But our girls did too. I'm proud of the way we stuck it out today."

Melinda Murillo led the way for the Bronchos, scoring 25 points on 7 of 14 shooting. The senior guard also hit five 3-pointers on seven tries, and added six free-throws on seven attempts. Jo'Nah Johnson added 14 points, four rebounds, and seven assists in continuing her impressive run since joining the starting lineup two weeks ago.

Jesheon Cooper finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks in a matchup of the two best bigs in the MIAA. Lindenwood's Kallie Bildner tallied 26 points and 17 rebounds. Cooper had just four points and one rebound in the first half, but had a huge third quarter and continued that stellar play into the fourth before fouling late in the game.

Central had to overcome a large disparity in free-throws late in the game. Midway through the fourth, the Bronchos watched as Lindenwood took its 26th and 27th free throws of the game. At the time, Central Oklahoma had only taken six.

The Bronchos leveled the playing field just a bit late. After Lindenwood charged back from down by as many as 18 to cut the lead to four with 1:36 to play, UCO closed out the game with six free-throws down the stretch. The Bronchos ended the game taking 17 free throws. Lindenwood didn't take another after making on its 27th attempt.

UCO jumped out to an early 20-12 lead after one quarter. The Bronchos hit four 3-pointers in the opening frame, three of them coming from Murillo, to build the lead. UCO kept it up in the second, knocking down four more threes to extend its lead to 47-32 at the half.

Blake Blessington added nine points, seven rebounds and three assists. Shatoya Bryson and Megan Hartness each added five points off the Broncho bench.

Central Oklahoma hits the road next week for a pair of away games. The Bronchos take on Emporia State on Wednesday before heading to Topeka to take on Washburn next Saturday.
