Stellar Defense Leads Bronchos In Texas

DENTON, Texas – The University of Central Oklahoma behind another dominating defensive performance won its fourth-straight game to open the season Saturday, beating Tarleton State 61-53 in the Pioneer Classic at Texas Woman's University.

The Bronchos jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter only to see the TexAnns comeback in the second, take a brief lead, and end the first half tied up.

But UCO responded.

Central had a big third-quarter run similar to that in the first to pull ahead, and the Bronchos held off a fighting Tarleton team in the fourth to capture the win.

"I'm really proud of how our defense has come out playing this season," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "There has been a point in every game where we had to have stops and they've come through on that end. Same can be said for today."

UCO held Tarleton State to just 30 percent from the floor (17 of 56 shooting), TSU only hit 5 of 22 shots from behind the arc, and the Bronchos forced 17 turnovers as well in the win Saturday. Tarleton came into the match shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor in its first two games of the season.

Melinda Murillo led UCO in scoring for the third time in four games to start the season. The senior point guard from Guthrie had 20 points. Murillo was 9 of 18 from the floor, 3 of 6 on 3-pointers, and added six rebounds and three assists to her game.

Jesheon Cooper was the only other Broncho to score in double figures, as she has in all four games this season. Cooper had 11 points and five rebounds to go with two blocks and two assists.

Central Oklahoma will stay in Denton for another day. The Bronchos play host Texas Woman's Sunday at 4 p.m.
