Bronchos Keep Rolling

Greg Wilson
EDMOND, Okla. (Jan. 21) – Joshua Ailey and Will Steltzlen recorded back-to-back falls to secure the outcome as No. 9-ranked Central Oklahoma continued a lengthy winning streak with a 33-9 triumph over Adams State Saturday night at Hamilton Field House.

The unbeaten Bronchos improved to 14-0 with their 21st straight victory dating back to last season.  It's the second-longest winning streak in school history behind the 23 in a row won from 2001-03.

UCO jumped out to an 18-3 lead before the Grizzlies pulled out a pair of close wins to get within 18-9 with three weights remaining.  Ailey and Steltzlen then put the dual away, with both scoring pins while involved in tight matches.

"I don't think our guys were as sharp as last night, but we still managed to get quite a few bonus wins and you always like to see that," said head coach Todd Steidley, whose team knocked off No. 2 Nebraska-Kearney 22-16 Friday night.  "We lost three close matches that could have gone either way and we need to find a way to win those."

The Bronchos had five bonus-point wins on the night, with Greg Wilson also scoring a pin while Caleb Cotter had a technical fall and Miguel Barreras a major decision.  UCO got regular decisions from Gage Stallworth and Bryan Dutton.

ASU took the early lead with a win in the opening match at 165 pounds as UCO's Dakota Head fell short in a frenzied comeback try.  Head trailed 7-1 after two periods, but had a reverse and three takedowns in the final two minutes before falling 11-10.

Barreras had three takedowns and two near-falls in a 15-2 rout at 174 pounds to put the Bronchos ahead to stay and Stallworth followed with a tough 4-2 win.

Wilson picked up his 12th straight victory in dominating fashion at 197, rolling to a 14-0 lead after the first period before getting his seventh fall of the season at the 3:18 mark.  Cotter then racked up three four-point near-falls in a 17-1 romp at heavyweight make it 18-3.

The Grizzlies picked up one-point wins at 125 and 133 to cut the lead to 18-9 to set the stage for UCO's late surge.

Ailey had just a 7-6 lead early in the third period at 141 when the senior pinning machine struck, taking Dylan Udero to his back and getting his 14th fall of the season with 56 seconds remaining in the match.

Steltzlen trailed 3-2 at 149 before going ahead with a takedown midway through the second period and then quickly turning Devin Vasquez over to get the pin at 4:18.

Dutton finished the dual with a 6-4 victory, clinching that win on a takedown with 52 seconds left.

The Bronchos are back in action Monday, hosting No. 13 Colorado State-Pueblo at 7 p.m.
