No. 16 UCO Crushes Washburn Saturday

EDMOND – No. 16 Central Oklahoma beat Washburn 69-49 Saturday in Hamilton Field House, a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game the Bronchos led for almost 36 minutes.

UCO (15-1, 7-1) went ahead early 3-0, then Washburn made a 6-0 run to gain an early lead. But when the Bronchos took the lead back 2:14 seconds later, they never looked back, leading by as many as 29 on their way to a fourth-straight win.

"I was really proud of the girls for staying focused today," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "After Thursday's win I didn't want them to be too high. We really needed to focus today and they did a good job of that."

UCO upset No. 2 Emporia State Thursday night.

Saturday, the Bronchos had four starters in double figures. Olivia Mason and Jesheon Cooper each had 12 points, while Melinda Murillo and Blake Blessington had 11.

Mason had a team-high nine rebounds. Mason and Murillo each had three steals to lead a Broncho defense that played one of its best games of the season.

Washburn shot 23.5 percent from the floor, making just 16-of-68 shots on the day. The Bronchos have a top-10 defense in the country, with opponents shooting just 33 percent from the floor this season. Saturday's game was a prime example of how the Bronchos can lock down on the defensive end.

"Jesheon protecting the rim is a big part of that," Hardaker said. "That gives our guards the confidence to do more on the perimeter."

Murillo made a layup for the game's first basket. Blessington added a free throw shortly after to make it 3-0 UCO. Washburn made a jumper, two free throws, and another jumper to take a 6-3 lead, but seven quick points from Megan Womack, Shatoya Bryson and Marley Anderson put the Bronchos ahead 10-6.

UCO led 16-10 after the first quarter, and stretched the lead to 17 at halftime, 38-21.

UCO's lead neared 30 at the end of the third quarter. Washburn made a layup with 3:46 to go in the third quarter, and didn't score again. Hayley Bryan made a jumper with two seconds left in the period to make it 58-29.

Anderson scored eight Saturday, her average this season. Bryan and Bryson each scored five, Womack had four and Madison Lee scored one.

The Bronchos are on the road for the remainder of the month. UCO plays at Arkansas-Fort Smith on Tuesday, Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m.
