Bronchos Ward Off Lindenwood

EDMOND (Feb. 29) – Jordan Ward is not known for her outside shooting prowess, but the Central Oklahoma point guard came through in a big way from beyond the arc Monday night at Hamilton Field House.

Ward – who made just three treys in UCO's first 28 games – nailed back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite an astounding 20-0 fourth-quarter run that propelled the Bronchos past stubborn Lindenwood 71-56 in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament.

UCO improved to 19-10 and advanced to Thursday's 8:15 p.m. quarterfinals against No. 22-ranked Emporia State at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.

"We didn't play well for much of the game, but Lindenwood had a lot to do with that," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "They had us confused and kept us off-balance offensively.  Jordan hit a couple of big shots to give us a lift and we finally got going."

UCO trailed 50-47 early in the fourth period when Ward splashed through a trey from the corner to tie it and she followed a Lion miss with another 3-pointer from the wing to put the Bronchos up for good.

Olivia Mason, McKenzie Solberg and Julia Mason all knocked down 3-pointers to continue the long-range assault as UCO quickly pushed its lead to 12 (62-50).

O. Mason added two free throws before Haley Weathers capped the impressive run with the sixth 3-pointer in a five-minute span to make it 67-50 at the 3:32 mark and the Bronchos coasted in from there.

Solberg scored a game-high 21 points to lead UCO while adding three steals and two blocked shots.  O. Mason had 17 points and a team-leading eight rebounds and J. Mason finished with 10 points and six boards.

Ward ended up with seven assists, six points and four rebounds.

The Bronchos shot 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from 3-point range.  UCO limited the Lions to 33.9-percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers.

Solberg had two 3-pointers early in helping the Bronchos grab a quick 8-2 lead and it was a 22-13 advantage after the opening quarter.

UCO led 31-24 at halftime after a tough second period and the Lions opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 34-33 lead.

Lindenwood went ahead by six (43-37) with 2:54 left, but the Bronchos got to within 48-47 by the end of the quarter.

The Lions hit the opening bucket of the final stanza to go up 50-47 and set the stage for Ward's game-changing 3-pointers.
