Bronchos tie best start in school history

EDMOND - The last time Central Oklahoma women's basketball team was 9-0, Guy Hardaker was playing shortstop for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma beat Mid-America Christian 78-57 Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House, tying the mark for best start in school history with the 1982-83 women's team.

"That just tells you how old I am," UCO head coach Hardaker said as he laughed. "Today was good. We had a chance to play everyone and that's good."

Melinda Murillo scored six seconds into the game to put the Bronchos up 3-0 and UCO and never looked back eventually leading by 35 in the second half.

Jesheon Cooper, who led the Bronchos with 20 points and 14 rebounds on Thursday, couldn't be stopped Saturday. The junior center scored early and often on her way to a 12-point, 18-rebound performance.

"Jesheon is playing more and more in every game and now we're seeing what she is capable of," Hardaker said.

Cooper played 20 minutes Saturday. She came out with more than seven minutes to play in the third quarter and never returned - she didn't have to.

The Bronchos were up 27-17 after one quarter. UCO led by 15 at the half and the lead peaked at the 2:59 mark of the third quarter when a Murillo 3-pointer gave UCO a 35-point lead.

Murillo led the Bronchos with 17 points, and Olivia Mason added 16 points. All but one UCO player scored on Saturday.

The Bronchos now are off for almost a week. But UCO will have a chance to set a school record when it goes for 10-straight to open a season on Friday, Dec. 16, at Southern Nazarene in Bethany, Okla.
