Melinda Murillo scores 28 to lead Bronchos to win at Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. - Melinda Murillo scored a season-high 28 points to lead Central Oklahoma and the Bronchos beat Cameron 72-65 on Thursday night. The Bronchos won their fourth game in six days to open the season.

Murillo, a junior from Guthrie by way of Northeastern A&M, is averaging 17.5 points per game through four games. The speedy and aggressive point guard never let up her attack on Thursday, and it paid off for UCO.

The Bronchos got off to a quick start, and led by slim margin 12-8 after one quarter of play on Thursday night. By halftime, it was a 15-point lead for UCO. But Cameron stormed back in the third and cut the lead to six heading into the fourth quarter.

The Aggies continued to crawl back into the game, and with 5:30 to play, Jamie Bonnarens hit a jumper to give Cameron its first lead of the game, 60-59.

Murillo didn't like that.

Just 10 seconds later, Murillo made a layup to give the Bronchos a 61-60 edge, and UCO never trailed again. The game's only tie was when the teams took the floor for the opening tipoff.

Murillo made another bucket to make it 63-60 with 4:30 to go. She made two free throws with 3:20 to go to make it 65-62.

From the time Cameron took its only lead of the game until the Bronchos walked away winners, Murillo scored nine points. She scored nine of the team's final 13 as UCO outscored Cameron 13-2 in the final five minutes of the game.

Murillo finished with 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting. She also had five rebounds and two steals.

Marley Anderson scored 11 points, Olivia Mason had nine points and a season-high 13 rebounds. Jesheon Cooper finished with eight points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

UCO finally gets a bit of rest. The Bronchos don't play again for another 13 days. UCO opens MIAA play on Wednesday, Nov. 30 against Northwest Missouri State at Hamilton Field House in Edmond.
