UCO Falls Twice At Midwest Duals

Danny Carrillo
KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 16) – A tie became a loss for Central Oklahoma as the Bronchos dropped two matches in the Midwest Duals here Saturday.

UCO fell to No. 12-ranked California Baptist 25-16 and then tied San Francisco State 15-15 after the two teams each won five regular decisions, but the Gators prevailed on the third criteria by scoring more total match points (43-41) to earn a bonus point and break the deadlock.

"A disappointing day," head coach David James said.  "We didn't wrestle with much intensity in either match and lost some tight matches that could have gone either way.  We've got to find a way to start winning those matches."

The Bronchos had a 15-9 lead over SFSU with two weights left, but the Gators earned a 3-2 win at 197 pounds and a wild 10-8 decision at heavyweight to create the tie that ended up a loss for UCO.

Kyle Factor had an 8-6 lead with a minute left in the final match after a sequence that saw him and Sam Alnassini score a combined 10 points during a scramble at the edge of the mat, but Alnassini escaped and then got the winning takedown with 20 seconds left.

The Bronchos got wins from 125 Zac D'Amico, 133 Aaron Hane, 149 Spencer Rutherford, 165 Danny Carrillo and 184 Brock Warren and none of them were easy.

D'Amico broke a 1-1 tie with a third-period near-fall and added a riding time point for a 4-1 victory, while Hane rode a second-period escape and takedown to a 6-3 triumph.

A second-period takedown was the difference in Rutherford's 4-2 win, Carrillo prevailed 3-1 on a takedown with 10 seconds left and Warren clinched an 8-5 victory with a final-second takedown.

The Bronchos won just three of 10 matches in the loss to CBU, but got two falls and a major decision to leave the outcome in doubt until the final bout.

D'Amico built a 10-0 lead before scoring a second-period pin at 125 to give UCO a quick 6-0 lead before the Lancers won the next four weights to go ahead 12-6.

Carrillo picked up a 10-2 major decision at 165 to pull the Bronchos within 12-10, scoring the last of four takedowns with 12 seconds left to pick up the bonus win.

Warren gave UCO a 16-15 lead two matches later with a dramatic third-period fall at 184, getting a takedown with 45 seconds remaining before turning John Johnson and ending it 10 seconds later.

The lead was brief as CBU went ahead with a technical fall at 197 and added another at heavyweight to arrange the final margin.

The Bronchos, now 5-5 on the season, go to Wichita, Kan. Tuesday for a 7 p.m. dual against Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Newman.
