Bearcats Eliminate UCO

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (May 1) – Central Oklahoma's Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Post-season Tournament woes continued here Friday.

The Bronchos – batting a league-league .336 entering the day – managed just three hits and were ousted from the eight-team tournament with a 2-1 loss to Northwest Missouri, giving UCO a 4-6 record in three MIAA tournament appearances.

"Kelsey (Berlin) pitched a great game, but we just didn't swing the bats well today and that's unusual for us," head coach Cody White said.  "It's obviously disappointing, but we're confident we'll be playing again next week and we just need to get ready for that."

The Bronchos, now 40-18 on the season, are virtually assured a berth in the NCAA Division II national tournament.  UCO was third in the all-important Central Region rankings this week and eight teams will make up the regional field when it's announced Monday.

NWMSU's Kendle Schieber handcuffed the Bronchos all day, needing just 66 pitches to finish the complete-game victory.  UCO had 11 fly ball outs and also struck out seven times.

Berlin was almost as effective in the circle in giving up only six hits and one earned run, but the senior left-hander was saddled with the tough loss.

Brooke Zukerman gave UCO a 1-0 lead with her second home run of the tournament and 11th of the season, this one a long bomb to left-center field to lead off the second inning.

It stayed that way until the top of the fourth when the Bearcats scored their only two runs, with the tie-breaking run coming across as the result of UCO's lone error of the game.

The Bronchos put the tying run on second in the bottom of that inning when Ally Dziadula singled with one out and then stole second, but two straight strikeouts ended the threat.

UCO had another prime scoring chance in its final at bat after Morgan Heard laced a one-out double down the left field line, but back-to-back fly outs left Morgan stranded and ended the game.

The Bronchos made several fine defensive plays to stay close.  Kaylee Brunson robbed NWMSU of a solo home run with a catch over the fence in center field and Dziadula threw out a runner at home on a slow-rolling grounder.
