UCO Runs Past Lions

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Dec. 14) – McKenzie Solberg scored 19 points and Central Oklahoma overcame an early 8-0 deficit to run past Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association rival Lindenwood 83-68 here Monday night.

The Bronchos missed their first six shots of the game in falling into the early hole, but used a 10-0 run to get back in the game and went on to take a 20-18 lead by the end of the first quarter en route to notching their fifth win in six road games.

UCO improved to 7-1 on the season and 3-1 in the league, while the Lions fell to 6-3 and 2-1.

"We got off to a bad start, but I was happy with the way we didn't panic and just worked ourselves back into the game," head coach Guy Hardaker said.  "We had a lot of balance again and came out with a great road win."

Eleven players scored for the Bronchos, with Solberg's 19 leading the way.  The senior guard made 8-of-14 shots with one 3-pointer and was 2-of-2 from the foul line in addition to pulling down four rebounds.

Julia Mason was the only other player in double figures with 12 points, while Marley Anderson added nine and Jordan Ward, Haley Weathers and Megan Womack had eight apiece.  Ward distributed a game-high six assists and Womack added a team-best seven rebounds.

Six missed shots and two turnovers put UCO in its early 8-0 hole, but Weathers hit a 3-pointer and J. Mason converted a three-point play during the 10-point surge that quickly put the Bronchos in front.

The lead went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter before Weathers splashed through another trey with 30 seconds left to give UCO a 20-18 lead and the Bronchos never trailed again.

Consecutive layups by Olivia Mason, Bailey Taylor and Anderson to open the second period pushed the lead to 26-18 and UCO went on to a 39-30 halftime advantage.

The Bronchos scored the first four points of the third quarter on a Solberg jumper and Ward layup to go ahead by 13 (43-30) and it was still a 13-point game (58-45) by the end of the period.

The Lions pulled within 10 after hitting a 3-pointer to open the final stanza, but back-to-back three-point plays by J. Mason and Blake Blessington put UCO up by 16 (64-48) and sealed the verdict.

The Bronchos return home Thursday to host Southern Nazarene at 7 p.m. before resuming league play Saturday with 1:30 p.m. contest at Northeastern State.
