Bronchos Roll Into MIAA Semifinals

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (April 19) – Central Oklahoma rolled over Emporia State 5-0 here Friday in the first round of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship.
 
It was the seventh straight win for the Bronchos, who improved to 16-2 in moving into Saturday's 1 p.m. semifinals against Northeastern State.
 
Southwest Baptist and Northwest Missouri meet in the other semifinal at the Cooper Tennis Complex, with the two winners meeting for the league championship Sunday while the two loser play for the consolation title.
 
“It was a good win for us and we're happy to be moving on,” head coach Natalya Nikitina-Helvey said.  “We played pretty well today and came out with a good win, but we know it's going to be a tough match tomorrow and we're going to have to be ready to play our best.”
 
UCO swept the three doubles matches to take control of the match and then ended it quickly with two singles routs.
 
Laura Klingert and Kristin Richardson had the key doubles win at No. 3, prevailing 7-3 in the tiebreaker to pull out a 9-8 victory.  Antonella Rossini and Rose Cabato won 8-6 at No. 1, while Petra Pesic and Alina Gorina claimed an 8-3 win at No. 2.
 
Pesic and Gorina rolled to identical 6-1, 6-0 routs in singles to close out the dual.

No. 3 – Laura Klingert/Kristin Richardson, UCO, def. Somer Schmidt/Tiffany Khounsombath, 9-8 (7-3).

No. 1 – DNF.
No. 2 – Pesic, UCO, def. Smith, 6-1, 6-0.
No. 3 – Gorina, UCO, def. Khounsombath, 6-1, 6-0.
No. 4 – DNF.
No. 5 – DNF.
No. 6 – DNF.
