WICHITA, Kan. (Feb. 17) – No. 21-ranked Central Oklahoma cruised to an 8-1 drubbing of Newman here Thursday afternoon.

The Bronchos of head coach Natalya Nikitina-Helvey won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead and then pulled away by taking all six singles bouts without dropping a set.

“It was a very good performance on our end,” Nikitina-Helvey said. “We were able to execute things well and play with confidence. Everybody played well and especially Eli (Abramovic), who had a really good win against a regionally ranked opponent.”

Abramovic toppled Laryssa Ferreira 6-2, 6-3 in the feature match at No. 1 singles.

The Bronchos had just one close match in singles, with Julia Shviadok prevailing 7-6 in the second set to complete a win at No. 2 singles. Lacy Caldwell, Anto Rossini, Anna Kochigina and Meredith Marney dropped a combined 10 games in winning the other four singles matches.

UCO, now 2-0 on the young season, is back in action again Friday with a 2 p.m. home match against Arkansas Tech.
