GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (Jan. 3) -- Three more first-period falls fueled another Central Oklahoma romp Saturday afternoon at the Lone Star Duals as the Bronchos rolled past New Mexico Highlands 42-6.
No. 6-ranked UCO had three opening-period pins during a 35-10 win over Colorado State-Pueblo to start the day and followed it up with three more against the Cowboys while adding a forfeit, a technical fall and a major decision.
The Bronchos, now 4-1, return at 2 p.m. to face Division I power Virginia Tech before finishing the all-day event at 6 p.m. against Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
UCO won the first four matches to take a quick 15-0 lead and really opened it up with the three falls.
Luke Elmore started the onslaught with a 1:00 pin at 149 pounds, Kelly Henderson followed with a 2:02 fall at 157 and Mikey Morgan needed just 1:31 to end his 165-pound match and make it three in a row.
Colby Robinson racked up six takedowns and two near-falls in an 18-3 technical fall at 141 and Tim Elliott had seven takedowns in a 20-7 major decision at 133, while Tommy McCarty picked up a forfeit at 174.
UCO also got regular decisions from 125 Nick Rice, 184 Daniel Morrison and heavyweight Dustin Finn.
Rice pulled out an 8-6 triumph on the strength of a five-point move in the final seconds of the first period and Morrison used a second-period escape and takedown to record a 3-0 shutout.
The top-ranked Finn started the dual with a tough 7-4 win over Jesse Boggs before heading to the airport to leave for Kingsville, Texas and the Cactus Bowl All-Star Football Game that he'll compete in next Friday.
