CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (Jan. 11) – Tim Elliott, Mikey Morgan and Tommy McCarty finished off perfect weekends to lead No. 5-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 24-15 triumph over sixth-rated Western State here Sunday afternoon in the fifth-place match of the NWCA/Cliff Keen Division II National Duals.
Elliott, seeing his first action of the year at 125 pounds, had a first-period fall to complete a 5-0 weekend that saw him post five bonus-point wins. Morgan also had a first-period fall at 165 to wrap up a 4-0 tournament performance, while McCarty knocked off sixth-ranked Larry Wilbanks 6-4 in finishing 5-0.
The Bronchos also got wins from 141 Colby Robinson, 149 Luke Elmore and heavyweight Cameron Gladd against the Mountaineers.
“It was a good win for us,” said UCO coach David James, whose team finished 4-1 for the weekend in the 16-team tournament. “There were some hard-fought matches and obviously getting two falls was very important for us.
“It was a decent weekend for us, though obviously we would have liked to have done a little better. We're not where we need to be yet, but we can take a lot of positives out of this weekend and build on it.”
The Bronchos, now 9-3 for the season, return to action Saturday when they host No. 6 Adams State in a 2 p.m. dual at Hamilton Field House.
