EDMOND (Aug. 26) -- Freshman Lacy Williams picked a fine time to score her first collegiate goal, knocking in a shot with 10:17 remaining to lift No. 23-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 3-2 upset over No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field on the first day of the Carl's Jr. Classic.
The defending Lone Star Conference champion Bronchos overcame a pair of one-goal deficits in knocking off the reigning North Central Conference winning Mavericks, who made the semifinals of the national tournament last year.
Williams' goal broke a 2-2 tie, with the rookie taking a pass from Meleia Bacon right in front of the UNO goal and booted in the game-winner. UCO's defense did the rest, with goalkeeper Carly Fischer making a big save with 3:26 remaining.
"Soccer-wise we have things to work on, but I love the heart and character of this team," UCO coach Mike Cook said. "Our players didn't let down when we got behind and they stayed focused in coming back to pull out a big, big win."
The Bronchos return to action Saturday, hosting Oklahoma Christian at 6 p.m. when UCO will be looking to break the NCAA Division II single-game attendance record of 1,848. Admission is free, with Carl's Jr. sponsoring numerous giveaways during the game.
All-American Beth McGill put UNO on top 1-0 at the 23:26 mark, but UCO responded with a tying score less than five minutes later when Melissa Terry put in a shot from close range after taking a nice feed from Kristen Juroch.
The Mavericks took a 2-1 lead six minutes into the second half and kept that advantage until the 68th minute when Lacy Cooley scored off a corner kick from Melissa Terry to tie it.
Fischer had a fantastic save with 13:02 left when she went high to jab a Danielle McCawley shot over the net and UCO broke the deadlock three minutes later on Williams' score.
Fischer finished with seven saves in the game, while Anna Snedeker, Chelsea Ryden and Joy Hagemann helped spearhead the defensive effort.
