Amerson Leads Bronchos Over Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (Dec. 14) – Kendahl Amerson scored 12 of his team-high 22 points in the final four minutes to lead Central Oklahoma to a streak-snapping 66-59 victory over Lindenwood here Monday night.

The Bronchos never trailed after using a 17-5 run to open up a 23-13 first-half lead, but needed Amerson's late-game heroics to hold off the hard-charging Lions down the stretch and end a four-game losing skid.

UCO evened its record at 5-5 with its first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association win in four tries, all on the road.  Lindenwood fell to 6-3 and 2-1.

"We fought hard and found a way to win," head coach Tom Hankins said.  "We've had a hard time closing out games, but we did that tonight and I was really proud of the way our guys hung in there.  It's tough to win any game in this league, especially on the road."

Amerson needed just 18 minutes to collect his game-high 22 points, coming off the bench to hit 6-of-13 shots with four 3-pointers and all six free throw attempts.

The Bronchos also got 10 points apiece from Jordan London and Cornell Neal, while Jarred Bairstow contributed 10 key rebounds and two blocked shots.

UCO led 33-29 at halftime and extended that to a 12-point advantage (49-37) on a London 3-pointer with 8:39 remaining before the Lions went on a 14-4 run to pull within 53-51 at the 3:48 mark.

Trai Jordan's tip-in and an Amerson trey pushed the lead back to 58-51 with 2:43 left and Amerson answered an LU bucket with another long-range dagger at 1:00 to make it 61-53.  Amerson made four straight foul shots the rest of the way to keep UCO safely in front.

The Bronchos trailed 8-6 early before two straight Amerson 3-pointers and another by Jacob Strassle fueled a 17-5 spurt that put UCO in front to stay at 23-13.

Lindenwood got within 30-29 late in the half, but London drilled a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to give the Bronchos their 33-29 edge at the break.

UCO is back in action Saturday, traveling to Tahlequah to take on intrastate rival Northeastern State at 3:30 p.m. in its fifth straight conference road game.
