SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 21) –
Eli Armstrong and Alberto Ruiz-Nava both fired even-par 72s to lead Central Oklahoma to a fifth-place finish in the St. Mary's Invitational here Tuesday.

The Bronchos closed with a 304 and finished two trips around The Dominion Country Club with a 601 total, tied for fifth with St. Edward's in the 16-team event.  Henderson State won the team title at 582, followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (586), Western New Mexico (588) and Northeastern State (598).

Ruiz-Nava ended up in a tie for fourth in the individual standings with a 145 total, shooting 73-72 and making 27 pars in the 36-hole event.  Armstrong's final-round 72 enabled him to tie for 24th with a 147 total.

Nick Pierce had a 77 Tuesday, while Alexander Hughes shot 83 and Wesley Jackson 84.

"It was a rough event," said head coach Josh Fosdick of UCO's opening tournament of the spring season.  "The greens kept the guys off guard and they were never quite capable of taking advantage of their good shots.  This event just showed us we have more work to do to be ready for April and May, so that's always good.

"It was a great tournament for Alberto.  He took advantage of an opportunity to play and played well.  I was also impressed with Eli. Having the flu kept him out all week leading up to the tournament, but he battled tough."

The Bronchos don't play again until going to Russellville, Ark. March 13-14 for the Dave Falconer Classic.
