AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 28) – Final-hole struggles proved costly to Central Oklahoma in the first round of the St. Edward's Invitational here Monday as the Bronchos opened the 2011 spring golf season at windy Grey Rock Golf Club.

UCO finished with an opening 330 at the 6,060-yard, par-71 layout, with its four scorers going a collective 11-over-par on the par-4 18th hole. Incarnate Word leads the 16-team tournament at 310, followed by Tarleton State (314), host St. Edward's (316), Redlands Community College (317) and the Bronchos.

Final-round action begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

“We ended on a bad note with the way we played the last hole and that was a big disappointment,” UCO coach Michael Bond said. “The wind really made the golf course play a lot tougher, but we magnified things with the way we played.

“We just have to put this round behind us and play like I know we're capable of tomorrow.”

The Bronchos, who finished in the top four in all four of their fall tournaments, had only one player break 80 as freshman Taylor Neidy came in with a 79 that has her tied for 10th in the individual standings.

Emily Leahey shot 82, Erica Bensch 84, Chaney Uhles 85 and Raelynn Farthing 89, while Mychael McWhorter had an 82 playing as a medalist.
