TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (March 7) – Molly Shivers had another dominating pitching day to spark Central Oklahoma to a Lone Star Conference North Division doubleheader sweep of Northeastern State here Saturday afternoon.
Shivers went the distance in both games, giving up six hits while striking out a season-high 10 in a 5-2 victory in the opener before coming back with a five-hit shutout in a 4-0 second-game blanking.
The junior right-hander also earned both pitching wins in Tuesday's two-game sweep of the RiverHawks in Edmond, finishing the week with 27 strikeouts and just five walks in 25 innings against NSU.
“Molly had another great day for us,” UCO coach Genny Stidham said. “She had great control and stayed out of trouble. We came up with some big hits when we needed them and got a couple of good wins.”
Niki Hunt went 3-for-4 to key UCO's 11-hit attack in the first game, with Shivers and Kelsey Tiger adding two hits each.
The Bronchos took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Brittany Weaver's RBI single and made it 2-0 in the fifth when Alley Roberts ripped her fifth home run of the season.
Ashley Geter's two-run single pushed UCO's lead to 4-0 in the sixth before the RiverHawks scored their only two runs in the bottom of that frame, but the Bronchos got an insurance run in the seventh on Hunt's RBI base hit.
Shivers helped her own cause again in the nightcap, driving in two runs without benefit of a hit. She had an RBI fielder's choice in the second to give UCO a 1-0 lead and made it 2-0 in the fourth with a sacrifice fly.
Lindsey McLaughlin upped the lead to 4-0 in the fifth with a two-run single and that was more than enough for Shivers on this day.
Hunt, McLaughlin and Roberts had two hits apiece to lead the offense.
The Bronchos, now 9-7 on the season and 4-2 in the LSC North, go to Midwestern State for a doubleheader Tuesday.
