WICHITA FALLS, Texas (Oct. 10) -- Elizabeta Abramovic had a pair of runner-up finishes to lead Central Oklahoma at the Lone Star Conference Singles and Doubles Championships that ended here Saturday.
Abramovic came in second at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles with teammate Julia Shviadok, dropping close decisions in both finals defeats. The Bronchos also got runner-up showings in No. 3 singles from Lacy Caldwell and in No. 3 doubles from Rose Cabato and Meredith Marney.
“We played pretty well and picked up some good, tough wins,” UCO coach Natalya Smith said. “We made a lot of improvement this fall and are looking forward to the spring season.”
Abramovic fell to East Central's Marta Valles 7-5, 6-7, 10-8 in the singles finals and the sophomore standout lost an equally tough battle in doubles with Shviadok with a 6-4, 3-6, 20-18 setback to a duo from East Central.
Caldwell lost to Tarleton State's Jade Charlot 6-1, 6-4 in the singles finals, with Cabato and Marney losing 6-7, 6-4, 10-8 in the championship bout at No. 3 doubles.
Abramovic made the finals with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over Cameron's Elle Sholles, while Caldwell advanced with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 triumph over CU's Karolina Muller.
UCO's four other singles players all lost their first matches, with Shviadok falling at No. 1 while Anto Rossini lost at No. 4, Marney at No. 5 and Lindsey Sweetgall at No. 6.
Abramovic and Shviadok made the No. 1 doubles finals with a tough 6-2, 3-6, 19-17 win over Tarleton State, with Cabato and Marney prevailing 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 10-8 over Midwestern State.
Caldwell and Rossini lost their first-round match at No. 2.
